Two percent of the Venezuelan population are indigenous. Some 600,000 people from 28 different ethnic backgrounds are quickly losing their cultures, traditions and customs. So when the new Venezuelan Constitution was passed in 1999, recognising the right of indigenous people to their own education, a small group of Ye'kuanas, Pumes, E'Òepas and Piaroas, decided to take advantage of this new opportunity.

Together they founded the Indigenous University of Venezuela (IUV).
