KERRY O'BRIEN, PRESENTER: Proposed new laws intended to deter asylum seekers from the troubled Indonesian province of Papua are already being tested. The new laws would see asylum seekers who arrive by boat, processed offshore and resettled in another country if they are found to be refugees. The tough new policy was announced after 42 Papuans were given temporary protection visas after arriving here in January, a decision which, you'll recall, enraged the Indonesian Government.

Secret Genocide
Human rights activists and church organisations predict that, without international attention and intervention, West Papua is in danger of becoming the next East Timor. Recent reports from coastal towns and highland areas in West Papua indicate that Enrico Guterres, one of the architects involved in terror activities in East Timor in 1999, is operating in the region, distributing shipments of guns to local militia. Guterres, indicted by the Indonesian court for crimes against humanity, has remained free while he appeals his sentence and has been operating in West Papua for more than a year.

The Hadzabe speak their own distinct click lout language and are known to be the aborigines on their land. It may well also be assumed that they are the direct descendants of the early humans who lived there some 3 million years ago as bone findings indicate.

British Government admits West Papua 'coerced' into joining Indonesia
Until yesterday, no major country has ever admitted that that the people of West Papua were forced into Indonesia against their will. Yesterday (13.12.04) at Foreign Office Questions in the House of Lords something very significant happened which may one day be seen as a milestone on the long road to peace in West Papua. West Papuans are welcoming what they see as a helpful and important step forward taken by the British Government in the search for a peaceful and just resolution to the West Papua conflict.
