Tune in for the 2 hour long session from 8-10pm, and hear Benny and Maria Wenda talk about the plight of the West Papuan people, their struggle for freedom, and the importance of music in acting as a unifying bond amongst them and their fellowcountrymen. They will also be playing music live on air.

Police killing, raping civilians in Indonesia's Papua, rights group says

Fri, 07/06/2007 - JAKARTA (AP): Indonesian security forces killed and beat unarmed civilians and raped women during recent operations against separatists in Papua province, Human Rights Watch alleged in a report released Thursday.

Indonesia's police chief denied any abuses were taking place in the isolated region, where mistrust between indigenous people and security forces runs high after years of bloody military crackdowns.

UK House of Lords debate West Papua

Lord Harries of Pentregarth rose to ask Her Majesty’s Government what representations they are making to further the independence of West Papua.

The noble Lord said: My Lords, I am grateful to the Government for allowing time for this short debate and, in particular, to the speakers who put their names down. We all feel some sympathy and admiration for the noble Baroness, Lady Royall, who has had to battle in such an indomitable way for so many hours already, and must now face a fresh subject.

WRITTEN DECLARATION CALLS FOR INDEPENDENCE REFERENDUM

EURO-MPs are to call for the EU to intervene in forcing Indonesia to respect human rights in West Papua – and grant the province a free and fair referendum on independence – in a Written Declaration launched this Friday (December 1st) to coincide with West Papua Independence Day.

The Written Declaration – the European Parliament’s equivalent of an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons – has been co-sponsored by Green MEPs Caroline Lucas and Jean Lambert, Plaid Cymru Euro-MP Jill Evans and Italian liberal MEP Luigi Cocilovo.

OGIEK OPPOSE KIBAKI’S DIRECTIVE ON TITLE DEEDS

The President’s directive that more than 12,000 Ogiek shall be issued with title deed in the Mau is ill timed and a monumental conspiracy to expropriate Ogiek ancestral land in Nakuru and Narok districts to other mainstream societies for political expediency. The Ogiek land struggle is as old as our independence and to date the Ogiek people are not legally among the 42 tribes of Kenya.
