BRAZIL: Indigenous Groups Defend Constitutional Right to Land

MIRANDA and ANTONIO JOAO, Brazil, Feb 29 (IPS) - Thousands of indigenous people in the west-central Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul are living in precarious camps or small overcrowded reservations, lacking the land they need to grow the food needed to overcome high levels of malnutrition.

But despite government recognition of their ancestral land, their claims are tied up in court. Meanwhile, their community leaders face the threat of being killed for attempting to secure respect for indigenous people’s constitutional right to their traditional lands.

On Friday, our West Papua Independence Day demo outside the Indonesian Embassy in London and our March for Justice to BP & Rio Tinto was the biggest ever! Because so many of you were with us you helped show all the world that we Papuans are not alone in our struggle any more.

Tune in for the 2 hour long session from 8-10pm, and hear Benny and Maria Wenda talk about the plight of the West Papuan people, their struggle for freedom, and the importance of music in acting as a unifying bond amongst them and their fellowcountrymen. They will also be playing music live on air.

Sun, 09/30/2007 - Dear friends of West Papua, We, from fPcN Germany, the German Free West Papua Campaign, got the opportunity to present a video at the Biennale in Venice at September 6th 2007, 11.35 am under the theme: “The cultural Dimension of Sustainability – Towards an Ecology of Culture”. Afterwards, there is room for discussion with the filmmaker Steffen Keulig, the “jungle child” Sabine Kuegler, a famous writer from Germany as well as with Benny Wenda, the chairman of the Koteka Tribal Assembly and chair of the Free West Papua Campaign UK.

How influential is a U.S. congressman that he could disrupt security in Papua or, in an extreme case, lead the province to break away from the republic?
The fear of this, however, seems so prevalent among our top policy makers that the government barred Democratic congressman Eni Faleomavaega from Papua.

The Thais have not responded to our concerns about the Queen taking the land of Hooh Yoh Akha, in more than two years.

The Queen of Thailand in fact has taken the land from adjacent villages including Pah Nmm Akha, in Ampur Mae Faluang, Chiangrai Province and other villages as well.

We need volunteers and lots of help to change this situation.
