UN Meets to Debate Rights of Indigenous Peoples

A report on Sixth Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

A U. N. body committed to defending the rights of the world's over 370 million indigenous peoples meets later this month (May 14-25) in New York. Among the topics of discussion will be ways to increase international recognition of indigenous rights and to improve the participation of native peoples in their own development. From Washington, VOA reporter William Eagle looks at the upcoming Sixth UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Fourth Session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues

The fourth session of the Permanent Forum will take place from 16 to 27 May 2005 at the United Nations Headquarters, in New York.

The theme of the fourth session of the Permanent Forum is: "Millennium Development Goals and indigenous peoples", with special emphasis on Goal 1: "Eradicate extreme poverty and Hunger" and Goal 2: "Achieve universal primary education".

U.N. Set to Designate Second Indigenous Decade

United Nations, Jul 26 (IPS) - A second U.N. decade spotlighting indigenous peoples is a step closer after the world body's economic and social council (ECOSOC) recommended another 10-year project after the existing decade expires Dec. 30. The decision will go before the 191-member U.N. General Assembly (GA)whose annual meeting begins in September.
